Cora Village of Santa Teresa in Nayarit Mexico

High in the remote Sierra Madre Mountains in the Mexican state of Nayarit are the villages of the Cora. In 1962 Cecil and Faye Byers were the first to land their Cessna airplane on the high mountain meadow of Santa Teresa.

It was a great honor and responsibility to introduce the gospel to these beautiful people. Soon there were frequent flights to the additional villages of Jesus Maria, La Mesa de Nayar, and beyond. Cora leaders asked Cecil to fly a crippled girl who had been operated on back home to her village of Gavilanes, in order to avoid a three-day mule ride. Cecil agreed, but only if the men would move boulders and smooth out ditches to make room for the Cessna to land. This was the start of not only helping in the spiritual but in the material.

Cora natives listening to Christian sermon

Fast forward 47 years. There are now believers meeting in these villages. A dirt road ties them together, except Gavilanes, where the options are a day’s mule ride from the road or flying in. Pastor Miguel Torres makes regular visits to bring further teaching to these groups of Christians. Several times per year we are able to fly in, this being the only contact with other believers for many of the Cora.

The trust and friendship we have built upon through the years is a great honor and responsibility. For those who have prayed and helped us financially. Thank you!
